Books and Authors

I like such a wide variety of genre's that some may think I'm a little bipolar.
One of my bookshelves is covered with Harry Potter, and Harry Potter related items.  Another contains the complete Lemony Sniket's series of unfortunate events. There is also Madeline L'Engle (a variety of her books including a wrinkle in time.), The Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Ring series, Alice and Wonderland, through the looking glass, and a few toddler books for Colt.  A nice little collection of  young adult type books right? So most people would assume I enjoy books of whimsy, a little fantasy, and a touch of action adventure. They would be correct, but when you look on the other side of the shelf you would find Anne Rice, Stephen King, Charlaine Harris, Chuck Pahlaniuk, and a few others. Now I know that when I think of these authors, the key words that pop in my mind are, vampires, witches, horror, and OMFG. Big difference from the first set right? sigh. I know I'm weird. And to top it off I also have a few P.C. Cast young adult vampire books, and I have read lord knows how many Young Adult fantasies that my cousin has thrust in front of me, and have enjoyed them. I will also admit here that because of said cousin I have purchased the twilight series. Now I don't blame her, she just peaked my curiosty enough to go out and get them. I don't like going to libraries, so I just outright buy my books.
My cousin, Jen, is like me, and would rather buy the books instead of borrow, and she frequents the book section more than I do, so she is my library. Everytime I go to her house she is thrusting books into my arms telling me how awesome they are and that I will love them. She is usually right, but most of these books are part of a series so there is usually a cliffhanger. When I finish the books she lends me I usually call her so we can discuss them. My opening line when she answers the phone is," I am going to Kill you! Now I am dying to see what happens next!" She never takes me seriously..sigh..Honestly I don't know what I would do without her, she is my best friend, on top of being my cousin, my library, and the only other person, besides myself, in our book club. Anywho, Jen likes the young adult fantasy books, Blue Bloods, Morganville, mortal instruments. You know vamps, werewolves, other supes , stuff like that. Now I am NOT knocking this genre'. I like them too. But where I am a bit all of the place, she is pretty fixed. She veers from time to time, but is pretty set. So when I lent her my copy of Chuck's Lullaby (one of my favs) , I didn't stop and think maybe it wasn't her cup of tea. She made it through the first chapter before she couldn't take anymore, then had to stop because it was a bit too much for her. (the plot has to do with SIDS, and  at the time I wasn't a mother, and she was, so where I wasn't bothered I see why she was so bothered now that I am a parent.) So now I I give her a plot synopsis before I lend her a book, and I don't bother with Chuck's books because I know they aren't for her. Most poeple wouldn't expect an average housewife to be a chuck fan, but different strokes, and all that.
SO my point to all of this rambling? I have decided to that I want to reflect on some of my favorite authors, and some of Jen's. Why we love them, what draws us to their books, and why we sometimes suffer through books that aren't that great just because we know the name. I will get a start on this probably next week. I want to chat with Jen and have her help me out. So until next time g'night
